Alumni Day 2017

Dear Ma’am / Sir,

It is our pleasure, once again, in inviting you all for joining the Alumni Day 2017 event being organized by the Global Alumni Association (GAABESU) of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur (erstwhile, Bengal Engineering and Science University Shibpur and Bengal Engineering College).  You all are aware by now that the ”Alumni Day” is a significant initiative on the part of the GAABESU and aims to make the diversely spread brethren congregate in the Campus of our Alma Mater once a year for renewing the bond of camaraderie over a day-long fun filled family event. Like earlier three years, it will be another ”home-coming” for the Alumni with their families on 31 December 2017 (Sunday).  Our sincere effort in planning a “meaningful” event will not be possible without patronage from the Corporate Sector of India and abroad. Generous contributions and support are also necessary from our Alumni members, occupying prime positions in the corporate institutions or, heading own business establishments across Continent.  You may also forward this as a mail/letter to all your business associates and batch-mates who are most welcome to contribute in ensuring success of the event.  We thank you in anticipation of arranging the much-needed corporate sponsorship and look forward to having you with us on 31 December 2017. Please confirm your participation /sponsorship to: moc.liamgnull@yadinmulaceb.

On behalf of Steering Committee of Annual Global Alumni Day-2017.

  • Dear Amitabha,
I am writing this as an alumnus of erstwhile BE College, not being a member of GAABESU.
    1. Long back, probably in 2004, I had registered myself at the yahoogroups of GAABESU. Since then my name has been included in the mailing list of GAABESU and I receive mails from it.
    2. When we were students (1962-67) the “Annual Reunion” was arranged by current students towards the end of January or early February. Its new avatar “REBECA” is still held but the timing has been shifted to early summer.
    3. When the notion of “Alumni Day” was first floated I had approached the office bearers of CAABESU questioning the necessity of a duplicate event.
    4. It is obvious that the timing is chosen when most NRI alumni visit India & GAABESU can expect a donation from them.
    5. When the notification of the “First Alumni Day” was circulated I noticed that alumni graduating before a certain year were exempt from paying Registration Fee. The average age of such alumni worked out to 72 years.
    6. I wrote to the office bearers of GAABESU that in most countries those attaining 65 years are considered Senior Citizens & are usually extended some concessions. In India the age bar is 60 years. I also pointed out that those alumni of 72 years & above may not be in a healthy condition to attend the function.
    7. As a result I was branded a “Discount Seeker” by the then Secretary of GAABESU.
    8. From this year’s notification I notice that the age bar has been further raised to 75 years, the average age of those graduating in 1964. This is ridiculous.
    9. Of course organizing any event requires money and charging Registration Fee from participants is in order. Then why exempt those who may not be physically fit to attend.
    10. I understand GAABESU disburse scholarships to student & also stand by alumni in their hour of need. Thus it require funds to finance those activities.
    11. However, in 2015, when some of us tried to form a “Mentor Group” to help current students to hone their soft skills our efforts did not materialize.
    Best wishes,
    Saktinath Mukherjee (1967 Met.E)
